Vinyl Pools

​There are basically three types of inground pools you can install: fiberglass, concrete, and the focus of this page, vinyl.

What is a vinyl pool?

To install a vinyl pool, the pool builders will dig a big hole and lay panel walls that are supported from behind so they won’t bow out. They are then secured together to make the shape of the swimming pool. A custom made vinyl sheet is then laid over it.

Why would I want one?

​Vinyl pools are the least expensive type of pool to install. Because vinyl is nonporous, it doesn’t absorb chemicals or harbor algae like concrete, which means it will take less time and may be less expensive to maintain. The liner is flexible and has a smooth surface, easy on the feet. After decades of development, the pool panels are more structurally sound than they used to be. And the pools don’t just come in the shape of a rectangle. There are so many design options!

Why would I not want one?

​The biggest drawback of a vinyl pool is its fragility. A layer of vinyl is obviously not as thick as concrete or fiberglass. The vinyl can stain. It can be easily punctured. If not properly maintained, seams and wrinkles can harbor algae and surfaces can become slippery

What about the cost?

Vinyl pools are cheapest upfront out of all the options, so if that is an important factor for you, this is a great option. It is important, though, to keep in mind that it will require money over its lifetime. The lining needs to be replaced every 5-7 years. It has the lowest resale value of any pool.
